So we collected the fifteen questions people actually ask about permanent jewelry and answered them the way we would at our table: honestly, specifically, and with zero fluff. These answers come from welding hundreds of pieces across Miami and South Florida.
The big one first: does permanent jewelry hurt?
Not at all. The weld is a tiny, contained spark that fuses the two ends of the chain together — it happens away from your skin, takes a fraction of a second, and no electrical current touches your body. A small leather guard sits between the chain and your skin during the zap. Most people feel nothing; the most anyone ever reports is a hint of warmth. If you can handle trying on a bracelet, you can handle getting one welded.
Living with it
Can you shower and swim with permanent jewelry?+
Yes — that's the point. We use sterling silver and 14k gold-filled chains that are water-safe and tarnish-resistant, so showers, the ocean, pools, workouts, and Miami humidity are all fine. The one thing we'd skip is soaking it in harsh chemicals — think cleaning products — which can dull any fine jewelry over time.
How long does permanent jewelry last?+
Years. The metals are made for 24/7 wear. "Permanent" refers to the clasp-free design, not invincibility — a dainty chain can still break if it's snagged hard (which is actually a safety feature). If a Bond & Fifth chain breaks, bring it to any of our pop-ups and we'll re-weld it free.
Does permanent jewelry tarnish?+
Sterling silver can develop a natural patina over time, but daily wear actually keeps it bright — the gentle friction of living in it is its own polish. 14k gold-filled has a thick bonded layer of real gold (not plating) that resists tarnish and holds its color for years of everyday wear.
Can you sleep and work out in it?+
Yes and yes. It's designed to disappear into your routine — sleep, gym, beach, repeat. Most people forget it's there within a day or two, which is exactly the charm.
Travel, scans & practical stuff
Will permanent jewelry set off airport security?+
No — fine chains like these are far too small to trigger TSA scanners. Fly with it, keep it on through security, and don't give it a second thought. It's one less thing to remember in the bin.
What about MRIs?+
This is the one time you'll need to remove it: MRI machines use powerful magnets, so techs will ask you to take metal off. Snip the chain at the jump ring with small scissors or nail clippers, keep the chain safe, and we'll re-weld it at our next pop-up — free if it's one of ours.
How do you take permanent jewelry off?+
Gently snip at the weld or jump ring — it takes two seconds and doesn't damage the chain. Save the piece and we'll weld it right back on. No drama, fully reversible.
What if it breaks or snags?+
Delicate chains are designed to give way under real force instead of hurting you — a feature, not a flaw. Keep the pieces: Bond & Fifth re-welds our own chains for free, and we can usually repair pieces from elsewhere too.

What metals are best for permanent jewelry?+
Sterling silver and 14k gold-filled are the sweet spot: genuinely water-safe, skin-friendly, and durable enough to never take off. Gold-filled is not gold plating — it has a thick, bonded layer of real 14k gold that stands up to daily wear. Be wary of anyone welding plated or mystery metals.
How much does permanent jewelry cost?+
At Bond & Fifth: sterling silver bracelets are $75, anklets $85, and necklaces $125; 14k gold-filled runs $85 / $105 / $135. Welding is always included — the price you see is the price you pay. Re-welds are free on our chains.
Is there an age requirement?+
Teens love it — it's a favorite sweet-sixteen and graduation moment (we just ask for a parent's okay for minors). For young kids we recommend waiting; little wrists and dainty chains aren't the best match yet.
Do guys get permanent jewelry?+
All the time. Our chains read clean and unisex, and plenty of groups — couples, teams, whole friend crews — get linked together. The look is minimal, not precious.
